Hoang
Trung Hoang is a Toronto-based portrait and documentary photographer whose practice spans more than twenty years. Many of his portraits are of artists and musicians, drawn from a career spent working alongside them. His documentary work emerges from the people and places he encounters as he moves through the world.
Born in Vietnam, Hoang spent part of his formative years in Toronto’s Regent Park. Having grown up first-generation in a culturally diverse city, he approaches people with openness, respect and an understanding of what it means to be let in. His work is patient, unposed and rooted in curiosity, whether he is meeting someone for the first time or catching a passing moment on the street.
His photography developed alongside a twenty-year career in music and culture as a magazine publisher, label executive and manager of Grammy- and JUNO-nominated artists.
Lately (Black Rabbit Gallery, 2026) is his first solo exhibition. It is accompanied by the photobook Lately: Zanzibar.
Practice
Hoang’s photographs emerge through attention rather than intervention.
Moving between portraiture, documentary photography, and observations made while travelling, his practice is grounded in patience — allowing gestures, relationships, and the rhythms of a place to reveal themselves before the camera.
